Study in Netherlands from Asia 🇳🇱

The Netherlands offers Asian students an almost entirely English-taught system, internationally ranked technical universities and a structured one-year Orientation Year to build a career after graduation.

Few countries have committed to English-medium higher education as thoroughly as the Netherlands, where around ninety-five percent of master's programmes are taught in English. For students from the Philippines, India and beyond, that removes the language hurdle that complicates study in much of continental Europe, and an IELTS band of roughly 6.0 to 7.0 is typically all the linguistic preparation required.

Dutch institutions are research-intensive and globally ranked, with TU Delft, Leiden and Wageningen among the world's leading universities in engineering, science and agriculture respectively. Tuition for non-EU students sits between six and fifteen thousand euros a year, considerably less than comparable English-language study in North America or the United Kingdom.

Applying through Studielink and securing your MVV

Applications to Dutch institutions are coordinated through Studielink, the national admissions portal, although some programmes also use their own institutional systems. Once admitted, most Asian students need an MVV, the provisional residence sticker that allows entry, which the university usually arranges with the IND, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service, on your behalf.

Because the institution acts as your recognised sponsor with the IND, the residence procedure is often smoother than applying alone. Processing typically runs four to eight weeks, so confirm your place and begin the MVV paperwork as soon as your offer is firm.

Proof of funds and cost of living

You must show access to around eleven thousand euros or more for living costs, commonly held with a bank such as ABN AMRO or transferred through a service like Wise. Day-to-day living runs roughly nine hundred to fourteen hundred euros a month, with Amsterdam at the upper end, so budgeting for housing in a tight rental market matters as much as the fee itself.

The Orientation Year and staying on

Graduates can apply for the one-year Orientation Year, the zoekjaar under the highly skilled migrant scheme, which lets you live in the Netherlands and seek work without an employer sponsor. It is a practical bridge from study into the Dutch labour market, particularly strong in technology, water management and agribusiness.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch?
Yes. Around ninety-five percent of master's programmes and many bachelor's degrees are taught entirely in English, with an IELTS band of about 6.0 to 7.0 usually required. Dutch is useful for daily life but not for most coursework.
What is Studielink?
Studielink is the central online portal for applying to Dutch higher education. You register your application there, though some institutions also ask you to complete an additional application in their own system.
Do I need an MVV and who arranges it?
Most non-EU students need an MVV entry visa. Your university typically acts as recognised sponsor and applies to the IND on your behalf, which makes the process more straightforward than applying independently.
What can I do after graduating?
You can apply for the one-year Orientation Year, which allows you to stay and look for skilled work without needing an employer to sponsor you first.
