No country enrols more international students than the United States, with well over a million on its campuses and India and China as the two largest source nations. For students from across Asia, that scale means established communities, deep alumni networks and a vast range of programmes from MIT and Stanford to large public research universities.

The financial commitment is significant, with tuition from twenty to fifty-five thousand dollars a year, but so is the return: practical work authorisation after graduation. The system also expects you to prove full first-year costs upfront, reflecting how it front-loads financial scrutiny into the visa decision.

From admission to the I-20 and SEVIS

Most students apply through the Common App or directly to institutions. Once admitted, the university issues a Form I-20, the document that certifies your eligibility for F-1 status. You then pay the SEVIS fee of three hundred fifty dollars to register in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System before booking your visa interview.

The I-20 and SEVIS record are central to your status throughout your studies, so keep them current and report any changes to your designated school official.

The F-1 visa interview

The F-1 visa is decided at a US embassy or consulate interview. You will be expected to show full funding for at least the first year, covering tuition and living costs, and to convince the officer of your genuine intent to study. Processing typically runs four to eight weeks, though interview wait times vary by location and season.

OPT and STEM OPT after graduation

Optional Practical Training, OPT, grants twelve months of work authorisation in your field after graduation. Graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics can apply for a STEM OPT extension, taking the total to thirty-six months, which is one of the strongest post-study work offers anywhere. The Fulbright Programme and university assistantships are leading funding routes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the I-20 and how do I get it?
The Form I-20 is issued by your university after you are admitted and certifies your eligibility for F-1 student status. You need it to pay the SEVIS fee and to attend your visa interview.
What is the SEVIS fee?
SEVIS is the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. You pay a fee of three hundred fifty dollars to register before your F-1 visa interview, separate from the visa application fee itself.
How much money must I show for the F-1 visa?
You must demonstrate funding for the full first year, covering tuition and living costs. Strong, clearly documented finances are central to a successful interview.
How long can I work after graduating?
OPT provides twelve months of work authorisation in your field. STEM graduates can extend this with the STEM OPT extension for a total of thirty-six months.
