South Korea has invested heavily in attracting international talent, and the Global Korea Scholarship is the centrepiece of that effort. Universities such as Seoul National, KAIST and POSTECH rank among the world's best, especially in engineering and technology, and growing English-taught programmes have opened them up to students across Asia.

Costs are reasonable by international standards, with tuition of roughly five to fourteen million won a year and living expenses of six hundred thousand to one point two million won a month. A strong manufacturing and technology sector gives graduates clear career prospects after study.

The GKS scholarship

The Global Korea Scholarship, formerly NIIED, is a full government scholarship covering tuition, airfare and a monthly stipend for selected international students. Applications are usually made through the Korean embassy in your home country, with deadlines typically around September, so plan your timeline well in advance.

The D-2 student visa

Study is authorised through the D-2 student visa, applied for at the Korean embassy or consulate after admission. Processing is quick, often two to four weeks, and you will generally need to show around ten thousand US dollars or a sponsor letter as proof of funds.

University direct applications usually open between September and November, so coordinate your admission and visa steps to meet both windows.

Studying in English and staying on

English-taught engineering and technology programmes have grown substantially, though TOPIK Level 3 Korean opens far more options and daily life is easier with the language. After graduation, the D-10 job-seeker visa allows six to twelve months to find work, feeding into Korea's technology and manufacturing industries.
