Japan student visa guide
Japan grants the College Student visa, but the crucial first step is the Certificate of Eligibility that your school obtains on your behalf before you apply at the Japanese Embassy.
Study in Japan uses the College Student visa, the ryugaku status of residence. The defining feature is that the visa itself is quick to issue because the real screening happens earlier: your accepting institution applies to the immigration authorities for a Certificate of Eligibility, or CoE. Only once the CoE is granted do you take it to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate to have the visa stamped.
You must show financial capacity of around 2,000,000 yen, or a sponsor letter with supporting evidence, to prove you can cover tuition and living costs. Language expectations are typically JLPT N2 for Japanese-taught courses, though a growing number of English-taught graduate programmes are available. Your academic records and admission complete the core file.
The Certificate of Eligibility process
After you are admitted, your school submits the CoE application to the regional immigration bureau, providing your documents and details of your funding. This step can take several weeks, so it shapes your overall timeline far more than the visa stamp itself. Once the CoE is issued and sent to you, the embassy generally processes the visa within four to eight weeks.
We help students assemble the funding and academic evidence the school needs for the CoE at no cost.
Funds, work, and after graduation
Demonstrate around 2,000,000 yen in available funds, or provide a sponsor letter backed by the sponsor income evidence, to satisfy the financial test. During study you may work part-time with permission to engage in activities outside your status, within the permitted hours. After graduation you can apply for a Designated Activities visa to job-hunt for up to one year.
Refusals or CoE rejections usually follow weak financial evidence, gaps in academic history, or inconsistent documents.
