Sweden and its Nordic neighbours are known for innovation, sustainability and an unusually balanced way of life, and that ethos runs through their universities. Institutions such as KTH, Lund and Chalmers are strong in engineering, IT, design and environmental science, with most international programmes taught in English at an IELTS band of around 6.0 to 7.0.

Tuition for non-EU students, between eight and eighteen thousand euros a year, is higher than Eastern Europe but buys access to world-class research and a society that international graduates often find welcoming. Studying in Sweden also serves as a gateway to opportunities across Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Applying through universityadmissions.se

Applications to Swedish universities are made centrally through universityadmissions.se, where you can rank multiple programmes in a single submission. After admission you apply to Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency, for a residence permit for studies rather than a conventional short-stay visa.

Migrationsverket permit and proof of funds

The residence permit can take six to twelve weeks to process, so early application is essential to start on time. You must show maintenance funds of around eight thousand five hundred fourteen Swedish kronor a month for the duration of your studies, evidence that you can support yourself throughout the academic year.

Scholarships and life after study

The Swedish Institute Scholarship is the principal government-funded route for talented international students, alongside Erasmus Mundus and individual university awards. After graduating, you can apply for a six-month job-seeker permit to look for work or start a business in Sweden.
